Lindsey Davis (born 21 July 1949) is a British historical novelist best known for her series of detective novels set in ancient Rome. Born and raised in Birmingham, Davis studied English at Oxford University before embarking on a career in civil service. However, her passion for writing soon led her to pursue a different path. Davis’s first novel, The Silver Pigs (1989), introduced readers to Marcus Didius Falco, a private informer (the ancient equivalent of a detective) in first-century Rome. The novel’s success marked the beginning of a highly successful career in historical fiction.

Davis’s novels are celebrated for their meticulous historical accuracy, vivid settings, and engaging plots. The Falco series, which spans 20 novels, blends elements of crime, mystery, and history, all delivered with a healthy dose of humour and wit. Through Falco’s investigations, Davis offers readers an immersive experience of Roman life, from the grandeur of the Emperor’s palace to the gritty streets of the Subura district. Her attention to detail and ability to bring ancient history to life have earned her a dedicated following among fans of historical fiction.

After concluding the Falco series, Davis began a new series featuring Falco’s adopted daughter, Flavia Albia, who follows in her father’s footsteps as a detective in Rome. This series has been equally well-received, continuing Davis’s tradition of combining rich historical detail with compelling narratives.
