Spelling Tips and Tricks
Let's be honest, learning how to spell can sometimes be boring, especially for children, but it’s important that you or your child learn how to spell from the start. It's not something you should ignore.
Read and Write
One thing to remember is that reading, writing, and spelling go hand in hand. So the more you read and write, the more your spelling will improve. What’s more: as your spelling improves, you’ll find that you’re able to read and write faster. So whenever you’re bored or have some free time, pick up a book and start reading, or pick up a pen and start writing.
Use the Right Software
You’ll find many different software systems on the market and available through the internet that promise to teach you how to improve spelling but only with the right spelling software will you actually learn something. Ultimate Spelling, for example, is a very popular spelling software program for children and adults, the the software has thousands of words ranging from easy spelling exercises for beginners to advanced spelling tips for adults. It’s also very easy to use and incorporates games and exercises, to make sure the user has fun whilst learning how to spell.
There are free spell checker built into most browsers nowadays. Choose a browser you will use for English along (we recommend Chrome) and install the add in for an English dictionary. This way everything you type will be checked for correct spelling - and you can set it to American English or British English.
Practise, Practise and then Practise a bit more
Without practise, you are not likely to improve your spelling. In the UK school kids are often set spelling tests, so it’s important that you take at a bit of time every day to practise your spelling. You don’t have to spend hours at it, but you should devote at least a few minutes every day in order to make steady progress.
Make a List of Problem Words
If you are finding specific words confusing, or difficult to learn, then jot them down on a piece of paper or on your computer / smart phone. Keep practising these words, along with the other words in your exercise book or from any spelling software you are using. You can use these words in practice sentences to make sure you’ve learned them thoroughly.
Have Fun Learning
Finally, it’s important that you have fun. If you play different word games, do crosswords, set yourself spelling tests, you’ll find that learning how to spell can be very enjoyable.
