Match the Quote

by Lynne Hand

Instructions to the English teacher

Famous quotes are a fun way to promote reading and discussion.

Hand out several quotes (use the internet for sources and remember to aim them at the level of your students ) make sure you have removed the name of the author. Get your students to read out the quotes and then discuss them. Do they agree/disagree, do they know who said it ...

For example:-

Who said the following?

"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on"

Is it true?

Finally write the names of the authors on the board and ask your students to match the quote to the person who said it (they can work in groups, pairs or individually for this one). Once everyone is finished (allow about 3-5 minutes) show the correct matches.

Don't forget I have some great quotes suitable for ESL learners in the EZine Archives.

Here are the addresses of some web sites with famous quotes:-
