Picture This - A Timed Game
Quickly review any vocabulary and elicit a couple of sentences (the older the kids, the more items you can review. I find this game works best with at least ten items to make guessing a little more difficult).
Split the class into two teams (you join in if the numbers are uneven) and write a score board for each team on the whiteboard.
Set a time limit (I use a one minute egg timer or a stopwatch) and demonstrate the game.
Decide on an image from those reviewed and tell the students they have to guess what it is.
Start the timer and begin quickly drawing an image to represent your chosen vocabulary item.
Mime zipped lips and make a lot of mmm-mmm noises to get the idea of no speaking allowed across and encourage the class with gestures to have a go at guessing. (keep pointing urgently to the timer and try to get a bit of suspense happening)
Upon a correct guess, immediately stop the clock, write the time on the scoreboard and have the class vocalize the statement (or the Q/R) associated with the word.
Reset the timer, take the first player aside from the group and point out a picture from the vocabulary reviewed before the game. Lead the first player to the whiteboard, re-emphasize no speaking with the zipped lips mime and commence play.
The eventual winner will be whichever team has the lowest score after playing the same number of rounds.
Continue play for three of four rounds (or until it begins to fall flat). After each round, work with the kids to add up the cumulative times on the whiteboard.
